Catwoman Purrrsday :: Dark Knight Rises Catwoman Action Figure

This 'Battle for Gotham City' action figure set is already hitting Target shelves (thanks for the heads up, Batcave Toyroom!) and, not surprisingly, eBay.

While I was planning on passing on these 4" Dark Knight Rises toys, I simply MUST have that Anne Hathaway Catwoman in this scale!

I can only assume that in true Mattel and Target exclusive fashion she's only available in this set (time will tell I suppose.) I'll keep y'all posted if/when I find one!

Harley Qwednesday Extra :: Playmobil Harley Quinn's Revenge

Just a quick pic in honor of the new Arkham City add-on 'Harley Quinn's Revenge.' A Playmobil version of Harley in mourning! I played some of the game this morning and am loving it as much as the rest of Arkham City.

Harley Qwednesday :: Arleen Sorkin

As any Harley Quinn fan worth their salt already knows, the creation of Harley Quinn was inspired by Paul Dini's real life friend, actress Arleen Sorkin.

Here's Miss Sorkin in a scene from 'Days of Our Lives' that could very well have served as catalyst to that inspiration:

(Dini says something to the effect that Arleen was wearing a 'Pied Piper' costume, but he could have been remembering this scene differently. I mean really, who commits a scene, any scene, of Days of Our Lives to memory with crystal clarity?)

In other Harley Qwednesday news: Yes, I did download Harley Quinn's Revenge to add on to Arkham City. More on that next week!

Return of the Galaxy Laser Team Strikes Back!

Boasting a supernova lineup that included Darth Vader in go-go boots, Chewbacca in cutoff jeans, a Luke slash Han slash Buck Rogers character, a not quite Lieutenant Uhura, a kinda sorta R2-D2, an X-F-16-Wing Fighter Jet-Spaceship, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong respectively, and last but certainly not least the most famous Lobster Turtle Alien of all, these little plastic figures ala Green Army Men, released under the banner 'Galaxy Laser Team' and 'Star Patrol,' are arguably the most well known, well remembered and well loved Star Wars knockoff toys of all time.

Manufactured by Tim Mee and reported to have first hit the scene in 1978 (according to an article in 'Playset Magazine' issue 52), these simple little packaged space adventurers were available through the early eighties, were released in 5" jumbo size in 1979, saw print in a comic called 'El Pueblo Perdido del Espacio' in an Argentinian publication called Ekaton in 1980, were ripped off by Screamin' Yellow Zonkers in the mid eighties, and even saw a re-release sometime in the nineties...and now in 2012, just in time for the end of the world...they're back!

If you were a kid in the late seventies or early eighties, chances are you had some of these guys in your toy box. Like the ubiquitous plastic Army Men, dinosaurs and Cowboys and Indians, these things seemed to just appear (and disappear) from kids' collections all through the eighties, as if some Galaxy Laser Fairy was shuffling them around the world. And if you, like me, somehow lost track of yours over the years then rejoice, because now you can get a brand new pack made from the original molds by the original manufacturer right here in the good old US of A!

And this time you don't have to deal with gaudy neon pink and green, because the reissues are made in awesome manly black and grey!

Manly!

Toy moments like these are rare indeed, and we can all thank Jeff Imell of Victorybuy.com:

"I've offered various plastic army men for sale online since about 2002. A few years ago, I purchased some of the final production run soldiers from the folks that bought Tim Mee. I was frustrated by the lack of US made figures and declining quality of many of the less expensive imported figures, so I kept in touch with the company and was eventually able to get a small production run of the classic Tim Mee Vietnam Era soldiers manufactured in the fall of 2011. During this process, I found out they still had some other figure molds, but wasn't offered much info as to what they had, other than some tiny catalog pics of bagged figures with generic descriptions. I began doing research on figures Tim Mee had produced in the past, so I could get a better idea about what molds they might still have. While doing research on the Internet, I found a couple of blogs about the space figures and was immediately hooked. I knew that the Galaxy Laser Team had to be the next set of Tim Mee figures to resurrect, and was finally able to get them manufactured this spring."

As for these figures themselves, they are as great as I remember them. The figures are crisply detailed and the plastic is high quality. They'll easily stand up to kids play and your own play for years to come. If you owned these in the past you owe it to yourself to buy a new pack (especially since the old figures tend to be a little pricey on eBay etc.) If you've never owned them, you should! If your kids don't know the awesomeness that is simple monochromatic plastic figurines, then they need to put down the X-Box controller and take a pile of these out to the lawn.

They come in a package of 48 (six of each character, three in each color) with two X-F-16-Wing fighters.

Thanks Jeff, your efforts are truly appreciated by this old toy collector!

Dream Pets by Dakin

When you've been obsessing over collecting toys for as long as I have, you have bits of knowledge that you have no idea how you came by. Things you just know.

For instance, I know the following two toys are Dream Pets, little stuffed animals from the fifties/sixties. And I also know for some odd reason that they were re-released a few years back.

What I didn't know is that I'd find two this past weekend, a re-issue and an original. For a buck each!

We first spotted the re-issue, 'Honolulu Harry,' at the flea market. My baby daughter immediately lit up when she saw him, and who can blame her? So we snapped him up for a buck.

A few hours later, we hit a garage sale and found this original 'Heinren Hippo.' Also for only a dollar. Well, I talked him down from two dollars.

Heinren Hippo has proven almost as popular as Honolulu Harry. And now my baby girl has an official collection of Dream Pets.

These Dream Pets are old school cool - velveteen skins around sawdust stuffing. Retro colors and design. They're just plain kitschy-cute!

I don't think I've ever seen a Dream Pet for sale anywhere (although I know I saw a collection of them at the Fair last year,) so it is super odd to have found two in one day at totally different locations. Moments like these make toy collecting fun!

Poisunday Ivy :: Another Poison Ivy illustration by me!

Poison Ivy lounging on some sort of man eating plant, natch.

I approached this illustration differently than most. Instead of an ink stage, I merely did a final clean pencil stage overlay on top of my sketchy pencils, and scanned/blacked the final pencils in Photoshop. It pretty much gave my pencils the exact look of my inks. I did all the coloring in Photoshop too.

Random Toy Pic :: The Bigger They Are...

This giant sized TMNT Android Body Krang arrived to me from Australia thanks to my good bloggin' buddy Tony over at 'I'm Not a Kid Anymore.'

I love oversized toys like this that are designed to fit in with your 'normal' sized figures; but this guy does beg the question: is he an action figure, a playset or a vehicle?

I'll do a proper review of him in the future, but for now enjoy this brief glimpse! In the meantime, my Ninja Turtles better watch their shell-covered backsides!

Harley Qwednesday :: Playmobil Cheerleader Harley Quinn

In addition to my customized Playmobil Arkham City Harley Quinn, I had quickly cobbled together a Playmobil Cheerleader Harley Quinn; which was simply a head and hair swap onto the Playmobil Cheerleader body.

Cute, but too simplistic.

So I decided to add a couple details:

The diamonds and domino mask were made by simply cutting some bits of electrical tape. Easy on, easy off (just in case I decide to revert back to a different Harley style, or reuse the parts for something else in the future.)

In addition, I used one bare arm and the lower torso/legs portion of the Playmobil Ballerina to change the design up a bit. The Ballerina and Cheerleader have a unique body type that is not  compatible with the rest of the Playmobil Fi?ures.

But it affords them the opportunity to have little skirts. So there's your tradeoff.

"Ra Ra Ree,
Ra Ra Run.
Look out Batsy..."

"...cuz I've got a GUN!"

"And I got sumthin' for you too, Robin. A message from Mr. J..."

"...'Eat my shorts!' HA!"

Random Toy Pic :: Anger Management

Anakin Skywalker came to me via a recent Lego yard sale find. He was one of many new (to me) minifigures I found in the rubbermaid full of Legos. I think he's a Clone Wars version, but I'm not sure.

Star Wars for baby, Star Wars for daddy

We hit some garage sales Saturday; one in particular advertised on Craigslist that their kid was selling a bunch of his Star Wars toys, so you know we had to hit that one first!

There was a lot of great stuff at great prices, but I'm not as huge into Star Wars as I have been in the past, so I am pretty particular on what I bring home. Luckily I found a gem for both my baby and myself.

For the baby, I found this swell cutesy Speeder Bike with removable Biker Scout:

These are from Hasbro's cute preschool Star Wars toyline (EDIT: the line is called 'Galactic Heroes'; thanks Jason!) I would have preferred a white Biker Scout ala Return of the Jedi to this camouflaged version that came from one of the prequels, but at least it's a Biker Scout. His design is accurate to ROTJ, and so is the bike. I am willing to imagine he was in the original trilogy, we just didn't see him - because he's camouflaged!

And for me:

This original 1979 mini Millenium Falcon! All you old school Star Wars fans know what this one is about!

Best part: only three bucks for the scout on bike and Millennium Falcon together!

I never had this Falcon as a kid, but I believe my cousin did. I had the X-Wing and Tie Fighter from the same line. Neat sturdy and detailed little ships all; the Millennium Falcon here has retractable landing gear, a rotating satellite dish and gun on top and is made of metal and plastic.

Last week the League of Extraordinary Bloggers had a 'Geek Confession' challenge. I couldn't think of anything (so I didn't do a post) until I picked up this Falcon; when I did I remembered that unlike all you cool kids who were into Han and Boba or even Vader etc., I was and always will be a Luke man, rooting for the good guy 'everyman.'

I prefer good over evil, Luke over Han, the X-Wing over the Millenium Falcon. I prefer lighsabers over blasters. In fact, as a kid I never owned one single Han Solo or Millenium Falcon toy. I had more Leias than Hans for Christ's sake! (For the record, I only had one Leia, and it was Boushh disguise Leia. But still...)

That's my geek confession.

And here's my geek-girl baby:

Poisunday Ivy :: Poison Ivy Illustration by BubbaShelby

I finished my Poison Ivy sketch I posted last Poisunday!

Miss Isley's facial expression is much more lively than in the original sketch, which was necessary since the pose is rather straightforward. The costume design was fun; It was my intention to give it a sexy blooming-flower feel, as if her lingerie were the pedals of a flower being revealed as the leafy outer shell opened in the sunlight. Or something like that. I also like how the bra/panty reveal look like a heart, since Ivy is the fertility goddess type.

Here she is with 'normal' skin tone. Because I tend to prefer my Ivy to be more human. Although the pink trim is a bit washed out in this version:

So I tried red instead of pink:

Which brings us right back around to green skin again:

I like them all. Thoughts?

M.U.S.C.L.E. Announcer guy

One of the standouts in my recent M.U.S.C.L.E. haul is this little stoic looking ringside announcer guy.

This is a M.U.S.C.L.E. I would have hated as a kid. I would have felt ripped off that I bought a set and a slot for a cool alien or monster was filled with this lame-o Howard Cosell wannabe.

He would have most likely ended up as backyard firecracker fodder.

But as an adult collector, I find him quite charming and a nice variation/addition to the M.U.S.C.L.E. ranks. He is after all the only non wrestler in the whole bunch! And he's perfect if I ever need someone to interview my toys and action figures. Hey, it could happen.

He is officially M.U.S.C.L.E. #162 (Nakano-San) and was available in the Cosmic Showdown 28 pack.

However I shall dub him 'Bryant Gumball.'

"And now we go live to ringside..."
