Imaginext Metallo and (another) Superman Coming Soon!

Coming out of absolutely nowhere, Kmart.com has just posted a new Imaginext two figure set (not in stock as of press time) featuring  the man with the Kryptonite heart: Metallo (and a new Superman too.)

Metallo, who could also easily pass as an Imaginext Terminator if you are so inclined, appears to come with a massive robotic 'hand' attachment, and Superman comes with a metal hammer that looks like it might fit over Metallo's head or something. Whatever, I am getting this set for Metallo even though I am not as crazy into the Imaginext Superman themed figures and foes as I am for the Bat stuff. The detailing on Metallo is just too beautiful to pass up, and I cannot think of a single Imaginext scenario wherein a half robotic man doesn't enhance play value.

So far this set has only been spotted (out of stock) at Kmart.com, hopefully it hits retail everywhere soon!

Brave and the Bold Metallo

When I put together my post on my favorite (non-Batman) Brave and the Bold action figures,  I really wanted to include Metallo.

From a character design perspective, he's beautiful. 'Beeautiful' in that mad Silver Age 'every color on one costume' way, but beautiful nonetheless. The Brave and the Bold Metallo represents the Pre-Crisis Roger C. Corbin, who took up the mantel (if not his fashion sense) of his brother, the first Metallo, after John Corbin's apparent death.

Visually, this 'action figure' is a force to behold. He even has a cool action feature similar to that of the Battle Armor He-Man and Skeletor of the eighties...

Push in on his chest window and it spins to show cracks...

...more cracks...

...and finally, Kryptonite!

Sadly, as awesome as all of that is, I just couldn't include Metallo in my Brave and the Bold 'Best of.' His great Kryptonite Heart action feature is shadowed by his terribly thought-out (if thought-out at all) left arm which is stuck permanently in 'left turn' mode. His grasping left hand would have been fine on a normal arm, but it's obnoxiously large and just hangs out in space always into infinity. If the arm had a joint to swivel it forward it would have been fine too. Sadly, it just sits there, forever pointing East.

Finally, his body is hollow lightweight plastic akin to a Happy meal toy and just feels cheap. I've considered taking him apart and flipping the arm around so it rests on his hip but I'm worried if I take him apart (he's simply held together by a handful of screws!) his Kryptonite heart will go 'sproing!', therefore I have yet to do so. I imagine when apart I could also fill his hollow legs with some clay or something to weigh him down so he doesn't feel so light and top-heavy, but again the effort just doesn't seem worth it at the moment.

I found Metallo at the flea market and paid around a quarter for him (maybe fifty cents) but would not have purchased him at full price. He's a mediocre toy at best, due to his arm's positioning. Sort of a 'one hit wonder' toy - he can...hold...someone...? Yay, for like a minute, then boredom sets in.

He's visually wonderful, yes, and as a statue of cheap plastic he fits the bill, but that arm really detracts from him being a mere display piece.

If you are an artist, maybe you can use him as a brush holder or something at your art station.

Random Toy Pic :: Random Toys Behaving Randomly

Random Flea Market finds.

Metallo from Batman: The Brave and the Bold - a pretty simple and 'cheap' feeling toy, at least he has a cool rotating chestpiece for Kryptonite revealing fun! He does look neat and displays well too.

Batman (helmeted) from Imaginext. Great looking Bat-helmet on this cute little dude!

Bob the Beaver from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Simple plastic figurine, but he's a pistol packin' beaver, so he's awesome!

He's a Kryptonite Hearted Snake...

No, this isn't the Governator. This is John Corbin aka Metallo!

Metallo is a man who was given a new lease on life, a metal skeleton, and a 'heart' of Kryptonite to power said metallic skeleton. Of course, no one in Gotham City or Star City or even Culver City would think to put a Kryptonite power battery inside a metal man, but in Metropolis this kind of thing is likely to happen on any day that ends in a 'y.'

This action figure represents Metallo as he appeared in Superman: The Animated Series. The toy first appeared in 1998 and came with a hover-bike accessory, hence his wide stance and 'motorcycle grip' of the hands. He was later released in a Toys R Us exclusive four pack. You can easily distinguish that this figure came from the four pack, due to the color of his pants.

The best part of this figure is his action feature: when you push in a lever on his back, a panel opens up on his chest to reveal his Kryptonite heart! Stand back, Supey! Wouldn't want you to get queasy!

He's pretty Terminator-y of course, which adds to the neato factor of this figure.

"Two-Face ain't got nothin' on me! Except maybe a full shirt."
