Have it Your Way

I discovered yesterday that they are giving away Marvel Superhero Squad toys at Burger King:

I am tempted to return for this silly little Silver Surfer:

...and maybe the Hulk because he glows in the dark:

If anyone already has these let me know what you think - I will only pick up SS if he detaches from that base he's shown on (which is why Captain America is an easy pass - he appears stuck on that lame disk launcher!)

Top 10 Favorite Childhood Christmas Gifts

I was tagged by Brian A. of Yesterville Toyroom to do a Top 10 Favorite Childhood Christmas Gifts post. No easy task!

Here's what I came up with after many revisions and a few edits too:

10) 90cc Kawasaki:

One Christmas, I think I was 11 or 12, my Dad got it in his head that it's be cool for me to have a Motorcycle - even though he was notoriously accident prone on motorcycles, we lived where it snowed so I couldn't ride it until Spring, we lived in a residential area where I could not legally ride it at all, and my dad is notoriously anti-outdoorsy so the likelihood of us going somewhere so I could ride it were zero. But he had a friend paint flames on the tank and a helmet so it looked cool and that was cool enough for him.

That Spring he tried to teach me how to ride it and on the first ride up the road he pulled the front brake as I went into a turn. I remember his head (un-helmeted) smacking against my helmet as we slid (slowly) into the turn. We came out of it fine, but Mom was now even less thrilled than when he concocted the whole motorcycle idea in the first place.

Sufficed to say we didn't ride it much after that. The neighbor teenager helped me ride it a few more times, but the novelty of it soon lost it's luster since there were so many rules and schedules to coordinate before I could even ride it. But I have great quirky memories, and that's what Christmas is all about!

9) Slot Cars:

Being a hot-rod family meant there were always slot cars and track in our house. Christmas often meant new track or new vehicles. Often we would replace the iconic "train around the Christmas tree" with a slot-car race around the Christmas tree. The only thing funner than zipping those little cars around their electric track is hauling ass towards a turn at full speed and watching those little cars fly off at a hundred miles an hour!

8) Sectaurs Prince Dargon and the Dragonflyer:

I really enjoyed the Sectaurs when they came out, and the piece-de-resistance was Prince Dargon and his Dragonflyer! I loved the "puppet" angle of the ride-on beasts. Dragonflyer's wings also flapped and you could manipulate his jaws with your fingers as you emulated his legs with the rest of your hand. Cool!

7) AT-AT:

When it comes to original Star Wars playsets or vehicles, none were cooler than the All Terrain Armored Transport, or AT-AT! I remember getting to open an early Christmas present the year I got my AT-AT. I chose my sister's present - it was the AT-AT Commander. Later, when Santa delivered the AT-AT I couldn't believe I was so lucky my older sister picked the perfect companion figure - and neither could anyone else in my family! Christmas is magical like that ;)

6) Tyco Train Sets:

Like slot cars, there were always Tyco train sets at my house. I loved setting the trains up in my basement and leaving them up all year long - so many toys had adventures on my trains, from Tonto to MUSCLE to Tron - they all took a ride on the Bubba express!

5) Tron action figures/Light Cycles:

Speaking of Tron - the year the movie came out I got the entire action figure set and both light cycles! The figures were an awesome transluscent plastic and their disks (or staff) all glowed in the dark. The light Cycles were amazingly cool - they held a Tron figure and hauled ass with help from a zip-cord. The shape of the Light Cycle allowed them to fly off the curb, go into a front roll, land on their wheels, and speed away at light speed! I had so much fun with those Light Cycles!

4) Transformers Trypticon:

I couldn't decide if this slot should hold Trypticon or Metroplex. Both were equally awesome, but Tyrpticon's motorized walking ability tipped him over Metroplex. I remember every Christmas I would stealthily peel back the tape of my Christmas presents to see what they were before Christmas. My Mom caught on and started placing my presents into dark Hefty bags beofre wrapping so I couldn't see what was in them.

Trypticon was so large he was placed against the wall, and knowing he wouldn't be moved until I opened him Christmas day, I decided to just rip a huge "window" out of the paper in back and see what was inside, replacing the box against the wall, window side in. It worked, and when I got up Christmas morning Trypticon was the first present I opened - being sure to begin tearing him open from where he sat ;)

No one was the wiser.

3) World's Greatest Monsters Rodan:

I had this giant Rodan terrorizing every toy I owned for years. You held him by finger holes in his back and by shaking him up and down his wings would "flap." His jaw cranked open by way of a lever behind his head, and his claws clamped shut with help of a couple rubber bands. This guy was huge and awesome.

2) Castle Greyskull:

The coolest playset of my generation, Castle Greyskull had it all. A trap door, an elevator, a weapons rack chock full of extra weapony goodies, a lockable "jaw-bridge" and it was A CASTLE THAT LOOKED LIKE A SKULL! What more could a kid want?

I remember one year my Mom and I flew to California to visit Grandma and Grandpa. I wanted to take Castle Greyskull and all my figures, so I wrapped it in tape and off we went. It was too big to be a carry-on, so I reluctantly handed it over as luggage. You should have seen the airport patrons at the other end when in the midst of Samsonite and Sears luggage a Castle Greyskull popped onto the rotating conveyor belt - no worse for wear I might add.

1) '77 Schwinn Competition Scrambler:

I got this bike on Christmas 1980 - my first bicycle. I still have it and I still ride it. I've ridden this thing to school in the snow, on dirt tracks, in fields and in cities. I've crashed into my Dad's work truck with it, ridden it with mismatched pedals after Dad backed into it (entirely his fault,) used the kick stand EVERY TIME even though all my friends threw their bikes down and leaped off them thanks to Dad's insistence that I always use the kick stand and I keep it nice (Thanks Dad!) I've polished it and re-packed the bearings and changed the tires and the chain and the tubes and the seat and lost the original pads and maintained the original grips and I love my Scrambler more than any toy I have ever owned.

Merry Christmas everyone - I hope 2009 brings you and yours as many wonderful memories as Christmases past!

Heavy Metal Noise

Cyborg is another DC Infinite Heroes figure from the Mallah's Revenge Walmart exclusive set. A great figure, Cyborg uses the bulkier Hawkman/Bizarro body and has a uniquely sculpted collar, head, belt and forearms.

Cyborg is a great addition to the DCIH line and, as with most exclusives, it's a shame he's not more readily available.

The Mallah's Revenge set came with Cyborg, Monsieur Mallah, The Brain, Raven, Robin and Arsenal. Don't worry, I'll get around to blogging about Arsenal soon.

This DC Infinite Heroes Cyborg is cool, and looks great with all my other DCIH figures, but as a stand-alone figure I do like my Teen Titans cartoon Cyborg better.

Cyborg stomps into the fray and brings our DCIH count to:

DC Infinite Heroes: 18

DC Infinite Villains: 15

SCORE!

Went out of my way to hit up Target tonight, just to see if I could find some of the Imaginext single packs a few folks have been whispering about in toy forum circles.

Well, Booyah boys and goils:

I snagged Mr. Freeze (who I have been eying ever since he popped up in his original pack with some sort of refrigeration unit,) Batman in black and grey, and Two-Face!

The only other single pack figures that were there was the Penguin, whom I left for another day and the Joker, whom I already own.

They are $3.99 each. I think a better value would be $2.99, but not a bad deal for a figure and an accessory. You get more plastic from these than with DCIH, so there's a better value already!

So now I'm officially collecting Batman themed Imaginext toys. Tune in soon when I have these bad boys opened up and set up with my old school Fisher-Price circus train!

Oh yeah, and then there's this coming soon which I just heard about today (picture stolen from eBay:)

I'm screwed.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that "3-8" means "38," which gives me a few more years to enjoy these before I'm too old ;)

Ask Faker Matty

It's that time again kids - another (first) installment of "Ask Faker Matty!"

Who is Faker Matty, you ask? Faker Matty is a response to Mattel's Matty Collector, or more accurately, a response to Mattel's much maligned customer service reputation. From Faker Matty's Facebook Page: "Your Source for All the Toys You Love! (minus the company that is running their reputation right into the ground)."

So without further ado, let's get this inaugural "Ask Faker Matty" underway, shall we?

Toyriffic: Hi Faker Matty, welcome to Toyriffic. First things first, are you and Bizarro Matty one and the same?

FM: Hey Bubbashelby, great to be here and great opening question! Bizarro Matty is very different than me, (Faker Matty). Bizarro Matty is the opposite duplicate of Matty, where I am an android programmed to appear in times when Matty is not available. With that said, I am constantly available, and Bizarro Matty displays an impeccable pension for quality social media marketing and communication.

Toyriffic: There is no sign of DCUC in my local Toys R Us. What gives?

FM: Did you look behind the Avatar figures? We have been getting word collectors have been hiding the DCUC figures where no one will look.

Toyriffic: How many times will you re-vamp the articulation on DC Infinite Heroes before you get it "right?"

FM: Great question. We are hoping to have the articulation exactly "right" by the time that line is cancelled. And let me tell you, toy fans, that line is on its way out the door -so expect to see improved articulation VERY soon!

Toyriffic: Who defines "right?"

FM: Do you see this crown on my head?

Toyriffic: How can you justify $15 each for a Superfriends Hawkman and a Superfriends Robin? I can MAYBE see it for the "unique" Robin who does not appear to re-use any previous components, but Hawkman was released and then recalled due to his weapon not meeting safety standards. You already planned on releasing him at the $6ish price point - you can't blame his higher online price point on "new tooling" or "limited production" - or can you?

FM: Yes.

*note: Faker Matty was checking his text messages during that entire question

Toyriffic: While we're on the subject of the Superfriends Hawkman... in fact, by releasing him without said choking hazard weapon, you are actually giving consumers less product for more money. How do you justify the price point now?

FM: We did a cost-to-risk analysis, and the price point for the Hawkman figure is determined by price point cost-to-risk analysis.

Toyriffic: Can all of us who signed up early for the 2010 MOTUC subscription service just to get Wun-Dar expect to be disappointed when you find 200 extra Wun-Dars in October under the stairs at El Segundo central, and then give them away on an obscure toy blog called Toyriffic?

FM: Normally we don't have an accurate way to estimate what the level of fan disappointment will be - but I assure you - We here at MattyImposter.com can guarantee, without a doubt, no extra Wun-Dars will end up at Toyriffic...We are looking into OTHER obscure toy blogs.

Toyriffic: How many times will you re-release the core MOTUC characters? And how many collectors who panicked and payed scalper prices after the first seven releases do you estimate this business practice shafts?

FM: Great questions, Bubbashelby. To answer the first part, we have no plans to re-release any of the core figures. That is not to say that we won't, but we only like to "plan" a few weeks out. Its really more of a "let's just get through the day-to-day" around here. To answer the second part of your question, I normally just drift off and forget that there was a second component to the question.

Toyriffic: Why do you limit ordering quantities to 10? Why not 5? Or 127?

FM: We are looking into both of those numbers, (5 and 127). We are still testing to see what a "good number" would be. But all of our fan's number suggestions are very important to us!

Toyriffic: How much longer do you plan on using the female JLU left leg mold? It's getting wonkier and wonkier with each female JLU released. I'm looking forward to the day you release Gypsy and her left leg bends all the way up and over her left shoulder. That'll be keen - and oddly, character accurate!

FM: Haha, Bubbashelby. There you go using that "p-word" again. Haha, "plans"! Good one!

Toyriffic: Thanks for your time Faker Matty!

Be sure to become a fan of Faker Matty on his Matty Imposter Facebook Fan Page! And tune in to Toyriffic semi-regularly for more "Ask Faker Matty."

Streets of Gotham: Full Throttle

The other day, when I opened up my Kanjar Ro action figure, I noticed a blurb on the back of the package calling my attention to BatmanTheBraveAndTheBold.com

On the site there are a bunch of fun online games, including my current favorite, the spiffy Streets of Gotham: Full Throttle

SOG: FT is a 3-D racing game and it's pretty fun and challenging. You can choose from one of five character themed vehicles, each of which performs a little differently. Because I loves me some Wildcat, I selected Wildcat's motorcycle.

The cool thing is, this motorcycle performs like you would expect - nice in a straight line but forget about handling in a turn! I also enjoy the fact that there is some "real" physics in the game - for instance, you cannot turn in mid air. If you hit a bump, you won't be able to steer until you hit the ground. And you will catch air!

There are six tracks of various terrain. I'm sure there is some strategy to choosing a certain vehicle/character for a certain track, but so far I'm just running through and coming in last, trying to get the hang of it all.

You pick up turbo and bombs to help you as you go along. You can race as (and against) Batman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Catwoman, Wildcat or Huntress. The game says that if you finish first once, you unlock the Batcycle, and if you finish in first two times, you unlock the Jokermobile! So far, I've finished in last all the time.

But I'm having fun! Here's the Batmobile wrecking out next to me. Hahah, just get yer learner's permit, ya' durned whipper-snapper?

Which reminds me: Brave and the Bold Wildcat action figure. Like, now, please!

I met my idol tonight!

I put in a good word for all my fellow bloggers out there :)

Booyah!

Eight signs I am a nerd:

Finally got my Red Lantern ring to compete the set! Awesome.

The Sun will come out, Kanjar Ro!

While I'm waiting to stumble onto upcoming Batman The Brave and The Bold figure releases I want (Stretchy Plastic Man, people!) I figured I should get around to another birthday present I got this year, Kanjar Ro.

Kanjar Ro is currently the predominant peg warmer for The Brave and The Bold figure line. If your local toy or big-box store sells these figures, chances are they have at least three of this guy hanging about.

Not because of the quality of the figure. He's as good as any in the line. He looks just like his cartoon counterpart and has a spiffy laser gun to boot. I just think he's a little out-there as far as a character kids would recognize or want, especially in a "Batman" toy line.

Kanjar Ro is very space alien/monsterish, and that isn't the general vibe the show puts off. I know he's made an appearance or two, but kids are probably much more excited to get colorful familiar villains and heroes and not pale would-be alien conquerors.

That being so, Kanjar Ro is definitely the go-to villain when this line produces a Green Lantern or an Adam Strange, so I wouldn't rest on my laurels too long. By that time he'll be long gone from the shelves and your Space-faring superheroes will look like bullies punching Sportsmaster in the gullet.

I think these Batman The Brave and The Bold action figures retail for about $7.99. Not the best deal in town, but not the worst. They are a good size, not too small and fragile, not too large and...fragile (DCUC I'm looking at you!) Sturdy enough for play, and the hex-hole play feature, while not the best for a character like Aquaman for instance, works pretty well with Kanjar Ro and his laser blaster accessory. The more of these figures I get (I have three now,) the more I like them, and I know I'll be getting more as the line progresses.

So hurry up with that Adam Strange figure, Mattel. Kanjar Ro is waiting!

MWUAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!

DAMN YOU INTERNETS!

You keep showing me such wonderful wonderful things that my eyes doth poppeth from their moors!

I've only played Batman: Arkham Asylum a couple times but I loved it and really want to get a gaming system only for that one game...okay, now for TWO games! A SEQUEL to Batman Arkham Asylum...already?!?!

The perils of teh internets

So I am still looking around the net since my last post, checking out upcoming toys...and suddenly I stumble onto this gem:

Aw man! I've been dodging this Imaginext line since it came out. I love them, and I can't tell you how many times I've held the Mr. Freeze in my hands only to say "not ANOTHER toyline to obsess about! Put it back this instant!" I do have the Joker, but I found him at the swap meet so he doesn't count. ;)

But now this. Two-Face. Dammit.

You know, I just may get myself out of DC Universe Classics and into Brave and the Bold and Imaginext - the toys are a better value, easier to find, and the lines keep bringing new and exciting characters into the fray!

There's even a Riddler set and Robin with a motorcycle out now. Check them out here. I'll be rethinking my toy collection while you do.

Upcoming WANTS!

Here are some shots I culled from teh internets of Batman The Brave and The Bold action figures that I am really looking forward to.

First up is Batman as a Green Lantern. This figure is already being found by some folks, so keep your eyes peeled. I know I am!

It is actually called "Sky Shot Batman" but we all know what's going on here. This character mash-up actually happened in the episode "The Eyes of Despero."

Next up is Gentleman Ghost. This figure appears to be made of clear plastic and actually has GG's ghostly visage instead of his typical headless appearance.

Finally we have B'Wana Beast. I have this guy in JLU form, and would just LOVE to have him in his Brave and the Bold version too.

There are a few more figures out and upcoming. Being found now are Metal Men Iron and Metal Men Gold, as well as Firestorm, Despero and a bunch of Batman variants. This is a fun line and the toys seem to be echoing the diverse cast and plots of the shows themselves. I love it!

Oh yeah - and then there's THIS:

An actual honest to God stretchy Plastic Man toy! Holee molee it's true kids! He comes in a set with Rubberneck and another Batman. ZOMG! I am so getting this set when it's finally released! It is apparently already available at Amazon, but I'll wait to see it in stores just to be safe. You never know - with shoddy paint apps and stuff - I'm always cautious about buying sight unseen.

Spring little Cobra getting ready to strike

I needed a toy fix today, so I took a little drive to Toys R Us. They are currently offering a lot of one-day and two-day-only sales, so it's good to swing by on occasion. Today their G.I. Joe movie figures were 2 for $9.99, so I flipped through them as I often do.

I don't collect G. I. Joe, and although I liked the movie. I liked the G.I. Joe anniversary figures more. But that line, like the Transformer Classics stuff, seems to be on hold until the movie lines die out.

Still, a toy is a toy, so I look through all kinds of stuff whether or not I specifically collect it. You never know what might catch your eye.

Ironically, the last (and at that time only) modern G.I. Joe figure I bought was blogged about here exactly one year ago tomorrow. In that post I mention the 25th Anniversary line's Cobra Para-Viper as one that had caught my eye. I never got around to picking up that particular figure, so I was pleased to stumble onto this re-paint which has been added to the G.I.Joe movie line:

Black and red always looks good together, and this Cobra Para-Viper looks set for some night time stealth HALO jumps! The color scheme is also extremely subtle, and although the Cobra insignia are there, this figure could be played with in any number of toylines without standing out at all. Don't get me wrong, I liked the original's purples and blues, but this figure just comes across as so much more menacing!

Para-Viper is packed to the gills with details that I hadn't realized were there when I first saw him in the anniversary figure line-up. One addition that surprised me to discover and is particularly keen is a set of flippers:

The flippers stow away behind his calves and can be attached to his feet for water jumps!

Man, how cool is that?! I particularly like this detail because one of the few original G.I. Joes I had as a kid was Torpedo. So I can kind of reminisce with this guy...not in the bathtub though. I'm a grown man. That'd be weird. Ahem.

The red lens goggles are removable from his helmet, and the helmet is removable from the Para-Viper's head.

In fact, everything is removable. There is so much playability in this one figure it's uncanny! In addition to his built in coolness, I can't stop thinking about how Bruce Wayne got to Hong Kong in The Dark Knight, and if I was still a kid this figure would substitute for a HALO jumping Bruce as well as a pre-cowl Bruce. But only if I was still a kid, because saying your Cobra Para-Viper is really Bruce Wayne would be weird. Because I'm a grown man. Ahem.

In addition to all the stuff that comes strapped to Bruce the Cobra Para-Viper, you also get a small machine gun, a rifle with folding stock, removable cartridge and stand, a dog-tag shaped stand for the figure, a removable knife in his leg sheath and a missile firing mini-helicopter-pack!

So Hasbro is pumping out these extremely detailed figures with tons of usable articulation and accessories galore...and stands...for $7.99 full retail price, and you mean to tell me Mattel can't even give us STANDS, let alone accessories, in any of their lines! Hey Hasbro, bid on the DC license when Mattel's time is up. Bid high. Bid often.

The value on a figure like this one is great at full retail, at $5 it's a screaming good deal! Sure, he's a repaint and probably made up of all re-used parts, but it's pretty darn creatively done and the figure does not suffer for it. Mattel uses maybe two body styles for every figure for decades (cough cough JLU cough cough,) has at best one accessory in every fifteen figures, and only provides stands with their female characters, if at all.

But who am I to complain. I'm a grown man who plays with collects toys. That's not weird. Ahem.

Rockin Robin

I had done an art trade a while back to get the bulk of the Walmart exclusive "Mallah's Revenge" DC Infinite Heroes figure set. I didn't get the whole set in the trade, and the only figure I still needed was Robin. I just recently found a guy on a toy forum who was selling his for a very fair price (thanks Larry) so I jumped, and now I have my DCIH Robin!

This is of course Tim Drake as Robin in his later costume, right before Damian Wayne took over as Robin and Tim adopted the guise of Red Robin.

I don't know if, after the return of Bruce Wayne, this costume will come back or if it will never be seen again, but it is one of my favorite looks for Robin. It's simple and streamlined, and reminiscent of the Batman Animated Tim Drake.

The best part about this Robin is that he is scaled to appear young. He looks real good next to the DCIH Batman, youthful without looking like a shrunken adult.

Maybe too youthful, as this costume appeared in Drake's later years as Robin, but I will take a Robin looking too youthful than a Robin looking like a man in his twenties any day.

In fact, Robin looks great next to any DCIH figure -- including his predecessor Jason Todd.

It's a shame this figure is only available in the Mallah's Revenge set. In many cases the best figures in this line have been in multi-pack exclusives, which has done nothing to help the popularity of the line - not to mention the poor distribution and high price point. Target still seems to sell singles for $4.99 (if they have any) which is fair. Walmart has the singles up over $6 I think, which is not. I think Walmart's six figure exclusive sets run about $35 - pretty high for what you get, especially if the set isn't all new figures for your collection. Which is why I did not buy this set and instead opted to creatively complete it through trades etc.

The DC Infinite Heroes line is currently going through a re-vamp with some new articulation appearing on the newer figures. I am fine with them the way they are, and don't have any newly tooled figures to compare them to yet, so I can't say if it is an improvement or not.

But if the DCIH line continues, availability becomes more regular, and prices stay low, I will stay on as a fan and collector. I may even shift my DC collecting more towards DCIH and away from DCUC (not entirely by choice - thanks to very poor availability - thank Mattel!)

But that's all up to the toy Gods and what they have in store for 2010.

At least I have a cool DCIH Robin.

Now if I could only find a DCIH Nightwing!

Robin swings into the DCIH tally bringing it to:

DC Infinite Heroes: 17

DC Infinite Villains: 15
