DC Direct Pocket Super Heroes JSA/JLA

These DC Direct Pocket Super Heroes were release way back in 2002. My daughter and I found them at the flea market about four years ago. A nice JSA meets JLA line-up - we were able to find Wonder Woman, The Spectre, Dr. Fate and Martian Manhunter.

Martian Manhunter originally came with the JLA round-table and chairs, but we only found the figure itself.

The Spectre and Dr. Fate are my personal favorites!

There were actually a few versions of Wonder Woman released in this Pocket Super Heroes line. This one was part of a JLA box set, I believe.

These are all pretty fun figures - very basic but charming. I suppose they would be considered minifigures nowadays, or they would get the blind-bagged treatment. They are about the size of a Playmobil figure. I do wish I had paid closer attention to them when they were being released!

Doctor Doctor, gimme the news...

This is the Golden Age Dr. Fate from DC Universe Classics. Dr. Fate has always been a favorite character of mine, so I am glad to have him from DCUC and hope someday to complete the entire old school JSA. Sadly that won't be easy or inexpensive. Wildcat was near impossible to find in stores, and Green Lantern and Hourman are Walmart exclusives, so I can probably forget about ever seeing them at retail too. Starman has also thus far eluded me as well.

Even Dr. Fate here was tough to find, I think I only saw him once in stores. He was also released in a variant 'modern' version but I don't care about that one. Which is good because I never saw that version either.

Dr. Fate is a very basic figure but that's due to the simplicity of his Golden Age design. He looks exactly like he should.

Fate's right hand is sculpted open so he can cast spells and do whatever other things Fate does.

Dr. Fate even came with an electrically charged ankh that fits into his outstretched right hand for more mystical fun!

This is the DC Infinite Heroes version of Dr. Fate.


This version of Dr. Fate represents Hector Hall under the helmet of Nabu, who is also the current comic book Dr. Fate. The first Dr. Fate was Kent Nelson.


I have never followed along very closely with Dr. Fate in the comics, but I love his design and concept as a character. I also love his golden ageyness, even if his costume is mildly updated from the original. I did really like the comic and character Fate in the early nineties though.


I've loved all of his cartoon appearances as well, from the JLU to the new Batman: The Brave and The Bold. Magical mystical superheroes are groovy.
