Hot Wheels Back to the Future DeLoreon 2015 Hover Conversion

It's 2015, and while you still can't get a flying car in real life, you CAN get a Hot Wheels version of the Back to the Future Delorean time machine with hover conversion!

What a spectacular Hot Wheel! Every kid I knew when I was a wee lad (even before Back to the Future hit movie screens) pretended at least one of their Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars could fly (usually whichever one had opening doors). So any kid would love this one even if they haven't seen the movie and don't realize it is also a time machine. Although I don't know how easy it will be for kids to find or get their hands on since old dorks like me are probably not letting it sit on shelves for long. Hopefully Mattel saturates the market with this DeLorean soon, but so far it seems to be pretty elusive.

The DeLorean has four tiny wheels underneath that still allow it to roll around, and the hover wheels aren't movable in any capacity.

The original Hot Wheels Back to the Future DeLorean is the first film version. Other than the wheels, the primary difference is that the hover conversion has the Mr. Fusion in back.

Here's hoping for more BTTF DeLorean time machine versions from Hot Wheels in the...wait for it...future! In the least we need one with white-walls and electrical components strapped to the hood like in BTTF part 3.

Today, October 21st 2015, is the day in the future Marty and Doc traveled to in Back to the Future Part 2. And obviously they SERIOUSLY screwed up the timestream because...

...while hoverboards are a scientific fact (but not a kid's toy by Mattel...yet), flying cars are not in every garage. LAME!

Oh well. The future may not be all that the movies promised us it would be, but at least toys both past and present are still awesome!

This batch of Back to the Future toys came to me via Mason at D.I Treasures. They were released in McDonald's Happy Meals waaaaay back in the dark ages of 1992.

Random Toy Pic: 88 Miles Per Hour!

This is how we play with Thomas the Tank Engine in this household!

My daughter inherited her big brother's Thomas the Tank Engine collection. I immediately brought out the Back to the Future DeLoreon Hot Wheel and we were able to get her up to 88 mph and saved the future together!

Where we're going, we don't need orange track.

On my way back from out of town I swung by a K-Mart that I rarely frequent, and came away with the brand new Back to the Future DeLorean by Hotwheels!

Hotwheels released a DeLorean in 2009 as part of their 2010 line-up, and later announced the most famous DeLorean of all (space) time (continuum) was to be released as a 2011 New Model!

Jump ahead (to the future!) and apparently it is currently on shelves, because I have it!

The best part is that this isn't just last year's DeLorean with some paint apps and a piece or two thrown on it. The car is a unique chassis mold and a unique interior. Yes, there's even a square of plastic in the interior that would be the flux capacitor!

This time machine is the first movie version, pre Mr. Fusion, which separates this release from the Johnny Lightning release of a few years back.

This Hotwheels release is car #18/50 of the 2011 New Models. It's official designation is "Back to the Future Time Machine" (how cool is that?!?!)

On the card back are the car's stats:

Specialty: Powered by plutonium or a bolt of lightning and crafted from the DeLorean DMC-12, the stainless steel body helps allow the flux capacitor to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity required for smooth passage through the space-time continuum.

I took all these pics the second I got home this evening, I'm so excited to finally have this vehicle! I want to customize one with HO scale train wheels so it can be pushed around an electric train track. And it would be easy to glue some wheels in sideways for a flight mode. I also want to figure out a way to make it lay flaming tire tracks. I can probably only do that trick once, though, so I'll hold out on trying it any time soon. But the possibilities are endless!

Other custom ideas:
     Get it wet, stick it in the freezer for a few hours, take it out on a warm day and watch the frost evaporate off of it ala post time travel.
     Connect a wire/hook to the back.
     Attach a team of plastic horses to the front.
     And of course, whitewalls.

Back to the Future in Hotwheels' future

We've already gotten a standard DeLoreon in the Hotwheels line-up, and recent news of Mattel obtaining the Back to the Future license pretty much made it a no-brainer, but this image found at the blog T-Hunted (via the Hot Wheels forums) makes it truly official.

Frankly this is all I want or need out of the Back to the Future toyline (even though I already have the Johnny Lightning version,) so I am a happy camper. I can't wait to send this puppy down some orange track!

This is the '81 DeLorean DMC-12, a 2010 new model from Hotwheels.

Nearly as cool as the Johnny Lightning DeLorean time machine from a few years back, this is your basic DeLorean pre Flux Capacitor.

This little bad boy is just screaming for all sorts of Back to the Future customizations. I will be picking up more and doing at least a 1950s version with white walls and radio tubes on the hood someday. Oh, and some train wheels to slip this puppy onto some HO scale track for damn sure. Then I'll get a train to push it around the track. Heavy!

Where's the Mr. Fusion? This little Hotwheel even has an opening rear hatch.

Hello! McFly!!! The DeLorean D-12 is a seriously cool Hotwheel, even without the time machine components.

Wait a minute, Doc. Ah... Are you telling me you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?

Johnny Lightning released this 1:64 scale Back to the Future DeLorean a few years back. One of the coolest movie cars of all time, and a spot on accurate casting! How cool is it to have a 1:64 die cast time machine? The playability is limitless! Park it next to your plastic dinosaurs or your Star Trek spaceships - it fits right in!


My only regret is that I didn't buy a dozen of these when they were released. I could customize one with white walls, one with train wheels, one with folded over flying wheels...


If I could only get my hands on a flying, time traveling train, I'd be in heaven.
