Yabba Dabba Goo(gle!)

With this Google header, Google is today celebrating the fact that fifty years ago 'The Flintstones' debuted on television!

Yabba Dabba Doo yourself a favor and watch some Flintstones cartoons today, or eat some Cocoa Pebbles, or take a Flintstones vitamin or smoke a Winston or something.

oh hell yes

Not only does Supergirl return to Smallville this season, but look how she'll be dressed:

Yessiree, that's Supergirl alright!

Homina homina homina!

Plus she'll be sporting around Smallville in this spiffy jacket/pants number...

...and then there's her business look for the weekdays. WIN!

I don't know when this episode airs. Just watch them all, dammit.

Read This, Too! :: Blog Crossover Event!

Here at Toyriffic I tend to focus on toys (duh,) but that doesn't stop me from periodically pushing my opinion on other pop culture items such as TV, movies, comic books etc.

So when a group of bloggers got together to blog about what they are reading in the comic book realm beyond the monthly 'big-two' superhero stuff, I decided I needed to jump in as I was already reading THIS:

Being a comic book and all around pop culture geek, I had known about Scott Pilgrim for years. But I never took any interest in the graphic novels. I looked at the simplistic, manga inspired pictures and bright covers and assumed there was nothing in between those covers of interest to me and my refined tastes.

Boy was I wrong!

Of course it wasn't until the movie came out and the previews enticed me that I started to change my tune. Then I saw the movie and absolutely fell in love with the world of Scott Pilgrim. It is a shame more people didn't see the movie, but I am going to go out on a limb and say it's going to do very well when it hits DVD/Blu-Ray on Nov. 9th, and it is certain to be a cult classic for years to come.

If you haven't seen it, do so as soon as possible!

I loved the movie so much, in fact, that after seeing it I wanted more. Lucky for me my library had Scott Pilgrim Vols 1-5 (of 6) and after voraciously blowing through them (I have just finished Vol. 5,) I'll probably buy Vol. 6 and eventually buy them all; they're worth owning for sure.

The Volumes all tell their own story but lead into each other with the common thread of Ramona Flowers' 'Evil Exes.' The art is deceptively 'simple' but there is real complexity to it; Bryan O'Malley truly has a gift when it comes to graphic storytelling.

Cute and sexy and funny and fun, Scott Pilgrim's world is like none other. The music, comic book, video game and other pop culture references are smarter and better presented than anything 'Robot Chicken' or 'Family Guy' could ever dream of putting forth, and the romantic plot is laid out in a way that guys from my generation can really relate to without feeling icky because we're essentially reading a love story.

Even if you've seen the movie there's tons more content in the graphic novels for you to digest, while at the same time it's an absolute blast seeing the original art and story and grasping the beauty and mastery of the comic-to-film translation.

If there was ever a graphic novel that cried out to be made into a film, it is Scott Pilgrim.

And while I'm at it, I also highly recommend the movie soundtrack. Tons of great tunes.

Harley Qwednesday :: Alone Again, Naturally

Huzzah for Harley Qwednesday! The best day of the week, next to garbage day of course. (If your garbage is actually picked up today consider yourself doubly blessed.)

First up for today's edition I bring you an illustration of Harley by the best artist ever...me!

Harley go BOOM!

And next up I give you a real treat. Get a load of this picture from an actual honest to Grodd real OKCupid user:

I wonder if the Joker knows that his gal pal is on the prowl?

Yeah, she's tempting alright, but you know what they say about online dating pictures vs. the real thing.

She'd probably just show up to the date in normal clothes.

Tease.

Move over Katy Perry and Elmo...

Did Huntress just say what I think she said about Aquaman?!?!

From the yet unaired (in the US) episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold titled 'The Mask of Matches Malone!'

The greatest single thing I have looked at today

If you haven't checked out Comic Twart you need to do so now and do so often. It's a bunch of awesome artists who come up with a character theme each week, then riff on it in their own styles. You see some real keen stuff every time, but this week's theme of 'Popeye' brought forth one of the awesomest Popeye strips since E.C. Segar himself, brought to us by the great Evan Shaner.

From Segar to Fleischer to Altman, it's all in there. Unbelievably concise and compact, yet so damned clever and funny too. I want to be Evan Shaner when I grow up.

Krang me, Krang me, they oughta' get a rope and hang me

Even though I enjoyed the cartoon and comic books, I didn't pay much attention to the original TMNT toyline at the time of it's original release. So finding them at the swap meet or via other secondary sources these days tends to result in some fun surprises.

This android body Krang is one of my favorite surprise finds from all eras of TMNT toys.

Krang (or at least his alien race) has been part of TMNT in some form or another from almost the beginning. This chunky fat-guy android bodied look is very specific to his original cartoon appearance, and is almost too corny to have been worth emulating since. So having this funky cool action figure is important for even a casual collector like myself.

My Krang does have some play wear...

...but I feel pretty lucky to have found him with a functioning door and actual Krang alien still inside! This is the type of thing that doesn't survive well over time on a loose played with figure, as kids tend to lose these types of little pieces.

Had I known back in 1994 that they made this figure I would have definitely tracked him down. I love funky alien robot-wearing brain monsters. Who doesn't?

"SHREDDER!"

What a G1-derful World

Get a load of these upcoming Transformers and feel the G1 love! First we have an all new Jazz which is pretty much too cool for words. Jazz is an absolute must have for me. And let's not forget about Tracks here. Not as pivotal in my collection as Jazz, but still pretty keen.

Even cooler in my mini-car-nostalgic mind is this upcoming scout class Windcharger! Not only is he a great modern Windcharger, but he transforms into a Mustang!

Oh yeah baby, I can't wait for these to hit stores!

One more reason Season 10 of Smallville is gonna ROCK!

Teri Hatcher has been cast to play the role of Lois Lane's mom in an upcoming episode of Smallville!

From EW.Com:

"Congrats, Smallville—you have outdone yourself! For the show’s 10th and final season, producers have scored perhaps their biggest (maybe even the biggest possible) casting coup: They’ve snagged erstwhile Lois Lane Teri Hatcher to play mom to Erica Durance’s Lois Lane!

I know what you’re thinking: But Lois’ mom, Ella, is dead! Follow along now…

In episode 8, titled “Abandoned,” Lois discovers old videotapes of her mother. I think you can figure the rest out for yourself. Am I right?

As you know, Hatcher spent four years playing Superman’s soul mate on ABC’s The New Adventures of Lois and Clark. The fact that the Desperate Housewives star was game to do this speaks volumes about her appreciation for that role (and the role it played in her future career). I’m sure they’re also paying her well, too."

Seriously cool move, Smallville!

Harley Qwednesday :: Almost Harley

Oh frabjous day, callooh callay, once again it's Harley Qwnednesday!

Let's start with some art. I was going through some old art files recently and came across this "Gotham Junior High" version of Joker and Harley Quinn I did many years ago.

And while perusing the internet looking for Smallville information, I found this picture of a singer named Kerli. As of this writing, I know nothing about her except that she sang a song used in a Smallville Season 10 commercial...

...but this image just screams Harley Quinn! Dontchya think?

If you want to know more about Kerli, check out her official website and of course Wikipedia.

Have a happy Harley Qwednesday! See ya' next week!

I B'Wana Rock and Roll All Night

Saw "Devil" tonight (loved it!) and on the way home I decided to stop by Toys R Us.

While there I couldn't believe my eyes when they fell upon this beautiful Beast:

B'Wana Beast! Odd that the card title emphasizes "Machete" over his name. Poor B'Wana gets no respect.

Finding this guy today is also pretty good timing, considering the season premiere episode of The Brave and the Bold that aired last night, and B'Wana's big role in it.

I absolutely love this guy and all the schlocky corny comic-bookyness that he represents. When I saw him on the shelf I literally grinned from ear to ear.

To have him in Brave and the Bold action figure style is just too cool for words.

Not sure of all the characters/figures available in this release. There was a "Ninja Batman" on the shelves, and on the back of Ninja Batman is a picture of Barry Allen Flash, but B'Wana's cardback only shows previously released figures. I do know a Gentleman Ghost was planned but do not know if he will be part of this release or not.

Regardless, I have me a B'wana, and I am a happy camper.

Ask Faker Matty :: It's Been a Long Time Since We Rock and Rolled

Welcome to another installment of Ask Faker Matty!

It's been a long time since our last installment - almost as long as it's been since you've found a new DCUC figure in an actual store - but we're back with another plethora of inane questions and banal answers.

No, wait, that's "Ask Matty" I'm thinking about.

Here you'll find some actual content. So without further adoodoo, let's hit the Qs!

Toyriffic: Hi Faker Matty, glad you could join us once again. Let's start with a softball: Which is more likely, a Bigfoot sighting or a new DCUC figure in store sighting? And which is the press more likely to believe?

FM: We can't control what stores carry our products. All we can control is what stores that choose to not carry our products we make exclusivity deals with.

Toyriffic: Faker Matty, Do you collect DC Direct? Why do you collect DC Direct? How many DC Direct figures do you purchase in a month?

FM: Great question! Which actually brings up more questions: Like, "If I was going to be stranded on a deserted island and I could only bring one toy...would it be a DC Direct toy or a Mattel toy?" and another great question I just thought of is, "whaaaa hwaaaa whaaaa cry! cry! Why do you like them better than us? boo hoo hoo!?". The questions are really unlimited!

Toyriffic: FM, Matty has said in the past that the Masters of the Universe Classics bios are not meant to be canon, and that fans can always make up their own. But some fans, (like maybe three of them,) aren't nearly as clever as Mattel employees. What do you advise we do?

FM: As of this month, MattyImpostor.com will be offering two versions of each figure each month - the standard version, and a version with a blank bio card...so fans can make up their own bios! Continuity, schmoo-ity!

Toyriffic: FM, for a company that hates the 200x iteration of Masters of the Universe so much, they sure like to bring it up, like, all the time. Is Matty a closet 200x-ual?

FM: Whoa, whoa, whoa...us!? Mattel!? No, no, no! We're TOTALLY not...you know...what you said. Not that there is anything wrong with it! We prefer, "hyper-anime detailist". (Oh gosh, that totally sounds worse).

Toyriffic: On the topic of 200x, we hear there will no longer be additional 200x heads in the future. What do you think Matty has against 200x-ual head?

FM: Did you read chapter 4 of the "Mattel 200-X Retired Designs Manifesto"? It clearly states, in great detail, that we will not be making 200-X heads. That doesn't mean we can't break our own rules from time to time, which requires additional chapters to be written to explain, and, well, you get the idea...you can just read more about this response in Chapter 5.

Note: But just like if fans don't like our bios, they can...make their own 200-X heads!

Toyriffic: On the Ghostbusters front, any chance we can get some juicy tidbits on future releases?

FM: Sure! We have some great...Wait a minute...are, "juicy tidbits" the same thing as "product updates"? {Faker Matty points to poster on the wall, stating, "Mattel cannot discuss or show juicy tidbits at this time"}.

Toyriffic: Hey FM - if I buy a Green Lantern Classics figure, and I put it on my shelf next to my DC Direct Blackest Night figures, will the shoddy Mattel quality control be more obvious - almost like it's shining from within with Green Lantern's Light?

FM: Why do you need DC Direct Blackest Night figures? You know, we are making a Black Hand too, you know. i mean, its not out yet or anything, but its...gonna be almost as nice as theirs. I don't know.

Toyriffic: One final question, FM: If Grizzlor dropped his loin cloth in the forest and no one was there to see it, would Matty still be a 200x-ual?

FM: {Faker Matty again points to the poster on the wall, stating, "Mattel cannot discuss or show juicy tidbits at this time"}.

Toyriffic: Okay, that's all I want to hear from you today, Mr. Faker Matty. Take a hike!

And be sure to join us next time (whenever that may be) for more insightful inspiring insipid commentary from the world's most beloved fake mascot, Faker Matty!

Harley Qwednesday :: Gotham Public Works

One of the best Harley Quinn Cosplayers around is this gal, from the Gotham Public Works team of Heroes and Ne'er-do-wells.

I've never seen these folks in person, but from the tons of images of them on their website and elsewhere online I can tell that their costumes are spot on; especially Harley's!

And obviously they know how to play to their characters' strengths!

Uh oh - Harley's getting angry! Think happy thoughts, Harley, murder, arson, Seinfeld re-runs!

The fun thing (I imagine) about playing Harley is that she has so much personality and character that transcends her costume/standard visual look. I mean, it'd be tough to pull off a cosplay Catwoman in a bathing suit, or a cosplay Huntress in a bikini, (although I am sure someone somewhere has tried,) but this "Harley Quinn at the beach" number is absolutely perfect, tasteful and still 100% in character. I can just see the beach-blanket-death-trap set for Batman and Robin now: "Hey Batman, what do you call a bucket-full of your little birdy friend? Chum! HA!"

Then Batman would water-ski in behind the bat-boat, jump the shark, grab Robin and save the day!

"Phooey."

Be sure to check out all the brilliant folks who make up Gotham Public Works at their website, and become their fan on Facebook too! But spend more time on Harley's pics, at least until Harley Qwednesday is over.

Shades of domino mask in repose.

Yummers.

And speaking of Catwoman...

This weekend past I found a Takara Microman Micro Action Series Catwoman mint on card at the swap meet - for three bucks!

A Japanese import, this Catwoman is more uber-engineered mini sculpture than toy and comes with a ton of articulation (30 points...)

...two different heads (one goggled and one goggle-less...)

..two set of boots (one pair normal, one pair with toe blades...)

...a whopping EIGHT set of hands in various poses...

...and of course her signature whip.

This modern Catwoman design is one of my favorite all time looks for her, so finding such a cool unique figure for so cheap really made my weekend!

Meow

I admit I haven't watched Batman Returns in years. Not the best Batman movie - not the worst by miles either, but not in my top three. I don't even have it on DVD - I only own the VHS cassette. I do sometimes consider picking it up on DVD though, I know it can be had for like $9 or something, I just haven't done so yet.

Anyways, when I stumbled onto this Catwoman image while perusing the internets recently I was instantly taken back to those pre-Batman Returns days of anticipation, when all the movie magazines and other preenternet forms of media were spewing images of DeVito as Penguin and Pfeiffer as Catwoman and Bat-Skis and missile-laden penguins.

I remember sitting in my High School social studies classroom drawing the Penguin and Batman and Catwoman on my desk ala the movie poster. After graduation I even met a girl who said to me "I sat in the desk you sat in during the period after you, and always loved coming into class and seeing what you drew on the desk." I love it when my reputation precedes me.

My hope for the next Nolan directed Batman movie is a love quadrangle between Catwoman, Batman, Talia Al Ghul and Bruce Wayne. That would be epically awesome if it came to pass - and even if it doesn't play out that way I know we're very likely going to see Catwoman in some respect. Just keep Halle Berry away. Far away.

But be that as it may, I can't imagine myself drawing pictures on my desk of whomever it is that will be playing Catwoman this time around. My heart and my penchant for vandalizing public property will always belong to Michelle.

McBatman

When I heard that McDonald's was giving away Batman: The Brave and the Bold toys in their Happy Meals, I told myslef I was not going to do like I've done in the past and get all neurotic and run to McDonald's every week and buy a kid's meal or a toy alone like a lunatic nerd in an attempt to get the whole set. I would just wait for an open opportunity when I was already at or near a McDonald's to get them, or I would wait until they pop up at the Swap Meet or something like that, or even (gasp!) not own them at all like any normal sane adult.

Using that strategy, I did get an Aquaman (Outrageous!) and a Blue Beetle (um, outstanding?) but missed out on Plastic Man (out to lunch?!?!) - I also figured Batman would have been the first release and so I assumed I missed him too - but on Sunday my daughter and I each got the man himself, Batman!

Not a bad Batman toy all things considered - and a good blue/grey Sprang inspired fifties-ish Batman to add to any collection. This Batman toy comes with some cardboard batarangs that he can toss with the flip of a lever on his back. there are also indentations on Batman's back so he can 'store" the extra batarangs. A fun concept, I'm sure the kids dig it.

In the meantime, I now have a sweet new Batman to add to my desk at work. Cool beans.

Raymond Scott's Birthday

Raymond Scott was born on this day in 1908.

Who is Raymond Scott you ask?

You may not know, but if you have ever watched a Looney Tunes cartoon, your ears do.

From Wikipedia: Raymond Scott (born Harry Warnow, 10 September 1908 — 8 February 1994,) was an American composer, band leader, pianist, engineer, recording studio maverick, and electronic instrument inventor. He was born in Brooklyn to a family of Russian-Jewish immigrants. His older brother, Mark Warnow, a conductor, violinist, and musical director for the CBS radio program Your Hit Parade, encouraged his musical career. Though Scott never scored cartoon soundtracks, his music is familiar to millions because of its adaptation by Carl Stalling in over 120 classic Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and other Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies animated features.

Thank you Raymond Scott for making my youth sound so damn groovy!

Happy Harley Qwednesday!

Welcome welcome welcome to another installment of Harley Qwednesday! Y'all want this party started right? Y'all want this party started quickly?

Well okay then.

Not terribly fond of the lack of domino mask on old Harl in this image, and I prefer original trilogy Stormtroopers to these Clone Troopers, but whatevs. From Hot Chicks with Stormtroopers.

There's also a DC Infinite Heroes Harley Quinn prototype that may or may not be coming out soon. Here's the prototype that showed up on eBay a few weeks back:

"Hold me closer, tiny Harley. Count the headlights as you dodge them." Apologies to Elton John.

And this third Harley Quinn comes from yours truly:

From my art blog.

And last but certainly not least, a review (by me!) of the first appearance of Harley Quinn ever in the Batman: The Animated Series episode Joker's Favor, over at Batman: The Animated Toys Blog.

That's all, folks! C U Next...Qwednesday.

Have a happy!
